MEnt student launches plus-size swimwear business

Alex Gibson, 22, is set to launch her own business this month dedicated to providing fashionable swimwear for plus-size ladies. She has been sharpening her business skills whilst studying for a Master of Enterprise in Fashion and Textiles.

 

After submitting her business plan for Beach Bacchanal, she has been offered a Government loan of £2,500 from a £180m fund to help new ventures and small businesses grow.

 

Significant demand


Though combining her studies with trying to establish a business has been hard, Alex is confident there is a significant demand for her products.

 

The brand, which allows people to customize their swimwear before production, was also a runner up the University's annual business plan competition, Venture Further.


She said: “Beach Bacchanal is a D-plus cup swimwear brand which offers styles that are normally only available for women with smaller sized breasts.

 

“In fact, women with bigger breasts suffer from a lack of choice. I should know as a 30H – it’s something that I have struggled with myself!

 

“It’s been hard to find comfortable swimwear that isn’t boring and dowdy - so I thought I’d do something about it myself.”

 

Confidence 

 

She added: “The course has been fantastic in teaching all the vital skills needed to start a business; from finances to market analysis and business models to implementation issues.

 

“However, I have been most impressed with the attitude of the lecturers and will always be very grateful for their help and support.

 


“They always encourage us whenever we lack confidence in our abilities and are keen to work with us towards our visions.

 

“The course has given me real confidence in my ideas and abilities as well as the company of some of the most interesting and 'go-getting' students I have ever met during my studies.”

 

Alex has recently entered the Salford Hundred Venture business plan competition with a one-in-five chance of winning £1,000.

 

She added: “I actually see my customers as part of my team, because I have been through exactly the same thing as they’re going through and I want to involve them as much as possible in building the brand.

 

“That’s why I want to create a product that would alleviate the problem and be stylish at the same time.

 

“I would quite like to go into lingerie – but first I need to prove myself in the swimwear market.”
