Competition success for Biotechnology YES team

A team of entrepreneurial Manchester postgraduate researchers have achieved success in the Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) competition.

Students James Leigh, Brian Law, Anna-Winona Struck, Sarah Shepherd and Matthew Styles formed the team called, Enzomax. The success comes after the team attended Manchester Enterprise Centre’s Summer School in July 2012.

They were one of only two teams selected from 15 to advance from the regional heat held at Old Trafford in November. Last week they competed in the final in London where they won the prize for Best Intellectual Property Strategy.

The Biotechnology YES competition involves pitching fictional but plausible bioscience ideas with commercial applications as an investment opportunity to a panel of experts. Many competition entrants progress into careers in industry or technology transfer.

Manchester Enterprise Centre lecturers Dr. Martin Henery and Dr. Robert Phillips listened to the team’s practice presentations and gave feedback prior to the regional heat and the national final.

The Enzomax team of researchers attended Manchester Enterprise Centre’s Summer School in the Lake District in July. They worked on business ideas aimed at solving problems in the local area and shaped their ideas based on feedback from local businesses and potential customers.

Dr. Henery commented: “It’s always so rewarding for Robert and me to see the positive change and personal development that students such as the Enzomax team undergo as they challenge themselves by taking part in activities like these.”

* Undergraduate and postgraduate Life Sciences students are currently undertaking a similar challenge as part of their studies - working in teams with Life Sciences researchers to address real world applications. There is a poster presentation event on Monday, 28 January 2013 at 3pm in the Michael Smith lounge.
