Venture Out 2016

Student ideas competition

If you think you’ve got the makings of the next big business idea, why not enter Venture Out, The University of Manchester’s student ideas competition.

There’s less than one week to go to submit your ideas – all entries must be received ahead of the deadline at 12pm, Monday 7th November.

Previous entrant and winner Alex Daly shows that you can still gain so much from entering Venture Out, even if you don’t go on to turn your idea into a reality – although we hope you will!

While studying for his MBA at Alliance Manchester Business School, Alex Daly recognised an opportunity to connect budding entrepreneurs with investors through an app that would make the process of identifying and securing investment convenient for both parties.

Alex’s idea was to build a platform that would allow entrepreneurs to upload a 30-second pitch to a website that would be viewed by potential angel or early-stage investors looking for the next ‘big idea’, which he dubbed ‘Tinder for Entrepreneurs’. On viewing a video, investors would be able to ‘swipe left’ if they were not interested in investing, or right if they were. Interested investors would also be able to get in touch with the entrepreneur to take the next steps towards financing the idea.

Despite scooping the prize for best idea in the Digital category, 34-year-old Alex decided not to pursue his idea further on completion of his MBA.  He now works in the Corporate Strategy team at Jaguar Land Rover and believes that entering the Venture Out completion has helped him to better understand how to formulate a well thought-out idea.

He explains: “I absolutely loved the Venture Out experience. Going through the process of developing the idea, testing it with a relevant audience and gaining expert feedback from Manchester Enterprise Centre was invaluable.”

There are five categories to enter this year:
  • Business: For ideas that have commercial potential via new products or services
  • Social: For ideas that improve the lives and social wellbeing of people and communities
  • Digital: For ideas that apply digital technologies to generate new experiences and innovative business opportunities
  • Research: For ideas that focus on the application of University-based research to real-world problems
  • PZ Cussons Innovation Challenge: Propose an innovative product or approach that would keep skin looking and feeling great OR Suggest how innovation can be applied in personal wash to make brands like Carex, Original Source of Imperial Leather develop customer appeal and convenience

Don’t forget to submit your entry by Monday 7 November >>
