Global Entrepreneurship Week 2012

A review of the week's events

Global Entrepreneurship Week is an international event with hundreds of events taking place across the UK and many more around the globe. This year it took place between 12 – 18 November with Manchester Enterprise Centre holding four inspirational events featuring a number of guest speakers.

TV presenter and property developer Sian Astley kicked off the week’s events at Ideas Factory – the Centre’s weekly guest entrepreneur networking session. Sian, a Manchester Law graduate, spoke about discovering a passion for property, building and interior design and how that passion was the driving force for setting up her successful property renovation business.

The second event, Progressing Your Business, targeted students from across the University who are already running, or in the process of setting up, their own business. Speakers from student start-ups The Printers Inc., React2IT, Beach Bacchanal and this year’s Venture Further winners Kaffeination were on hand to share insight into their entrepreneurial journey and tips for taking new ventures to the next level.

Alex Gibson, Master of Enterprise (MEnt) student and Venture Further 2012 runner-up with Beach Bacchanal: “I’ve really enjoyed speaking to the students today about what motivated me to start my business, and to share advice about making the right contacts.”

Matthias Schmid, MSc Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship student and co-founder of Kaffeination, added: “It is great to share our ideas with students who are interested entrepreneurship, and to see their passion about their own business ideas. I’ve really enjoyed talking with them and exchanging insights.”

Social enterprise was the focus of the third event, featuring speakers from student-run social ventures and the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) society. The week’s activities concluded with an interactive session based around students defining and creating innovative solutions to global poverty – the theme for this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Lynn Sheppard, Director of Manchester Enterprise Centre, commented: “Global Entrepreneurship Week enables us to raise the profile of enterprise and entrepreneurship among students both in Manchester Business School and across the University. We want our students to create successful ventures and play their part in building a strong economy.”
