What is your current job title?

Youth Arts Worker / Freelance Dance Teacher.

Tell us about your business.

Raising Aspirations is a social enterprise that provides dance classes for the local community. The classes are open to everyone and are held at a youth centre.

In an average week I teach up to 40 children, seven days a week for three hours a day. I currently have a group of 7-9 year olds and I have never known a group of people inspire me so much - they are so focused and dedicated.

I train some of the groups for competitions and I’ve been to the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in Las Vegas with my groups for the last few years.

I started dancing when I was 16, my cousin was my inspiration, and from this I decided that I wanted to do youth and social work. I met somebody who supported me and acted as a mentor, teaching me how to submit bids for funding.

How did your involvement in the competitions help you to reach your current position?

The competitions gave me a lot of confidence and allowed me to consolidate my ideas to give me a clear vision about what I wanted to do.

The support from Manchester Enterprise Centre was fantastic, helping me with my business plan and my ideas. One of the lecturers, Lee Webster, even emailed me with some advice whilst he was on holiday because he believed in me so much!

What is your vision for the future?

I would like to hire a prestigious venue, such as the Bridgewater Hall, and hold a dance competition combining ballet, tap, and contemporary styles.

I would also like to open up more dance schools in Manchester to get more children taking part in constructive activities rather than being on the streets or doing nothing.

What advice would you give to someone considering entering Venture Out or Venture Further?

Research what you want to do and go for it!
